A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a required document to be provided by a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) for high-risk construction work. As a minimum, it must outline the high-risk construction work (HRCW) activities to be carried out, the health and safety hazards associated with such activities, the control measures to be put in place to manage the risks, and methods of implementation. In addition, the SWMS should specify the person(s) responsible for implementing the controls and the names of the workers who were consulted in the preparation of the SWMS.
A SWMS is considered to be an administrative control measure in the control hierarchy aimed to eliminate or minimise the risks. It is used as guidance for supervisors and PCBUs to ensure appropriate safety procedures, structures, and tools are in place at the workplace.
