Personal protective equipment (PPE) is clothing and equipment such as boots, hard hats, and gloves worn by workers and visitors at a workplace to shield them from physical safety hazards. PPE is considered as the lowest hierarchy of control measure and as such to only be relied on if reasonably practical higher-level control measures such as elimination or administrative controls can be implemented.

A person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must consult with workers and other competent persons when selecting PPE based on the workplace layout, plant used, work to be carried out, and the workers. A PCBU is responsible for providing the most suitable PPE that fit the workers and train the workers on proper use/instructions. A PCBU may take legal actions against any worker refusing to wear or correctly use the PPE.
