Risk Control Measures

  • Pre-inspect and operate the machine as per manufacturers’ instructions
  • Tree shear attachment – attached and operated as per manufacturers’ instructions:
  • Do not operate the tree shear with the push over bar removed
  • Never shear trees with a larger diameter than that listed in the operating manual
  • Never work from the downhill side of a slope or hill or, if the tree is leaning across the line of machine travel
  • Where appropriate, reduce root ball by ripping and clear the area in front of the tree
  • Chainsaw operator to scarf tree where required:
  • Pre-inspect, start and operate the chainsaw as per manufacturer’s instructions/manual
  • DO NOT fell trees in high winds
  • Where possible, avoid felling trees onto other trees or objects
  • Objects or branches may get thrown back towards the operator
  • Never fall one tree into another tree in order to remove it
  • Do not work underneath trees that have lodged trees
  • A tree that has not fallen completely to the ground because it is lodged or leaning against another tree
  • Knock down loose branches or avoid tress that have branches from others trees lodged in them
  • Branches caught from trees felled nearby
  • Wait until all tree movement stops after falling before checking to see if the area is safe
  • Check for hung up limbs / branches
  • Bring down any hung-up tree limbs where safe to do so
  • Ensure the area is safe before allowing ground-workers to enter the area again.
