Risk Control Measures

Hazardous Manual Handling:

  • Avoid long periods of repetitive movements
  • Avoid awkward and sustained positions
  • Avoid prolonged sitting
  • Use mechanical lifting aids when possible
  • Use two or more people for lifting & moving heavy / awkward equipment
  • Regular breaks.

Ensure:

  • Adequate breaks to reduce manual handling injuries
  • Access to drinking water
  • Electrical leads do not run through water or lay across wet surfaces
  • Clean up spills and water from work areas during the shift to reduce risk of slips and falls
  • Mortarboards are not overloaded with an excess of mortar.

Mixing the render:

  • All cement products will be heavy to lift – use caution
  • Ensure cement products are positioned as close as possible to the cement mixer
  • If using pre-mixed dry cement, use small size bags when possible to reduce lifting heavy
  • Use smaller size flat shovel when dry mixing to reduce the weight of materials on the shovel
  • Don’t lift and twist when handling heavy materials – lift and turn
  • Wet down materials as soon as possible to reduce dust
  • Don’t overload wheelbarrows when moving the mortar from the mixing area to the work area
