Risk Control Measures

  • Use PPE appropriate for battery / chemical work
  • Confirm isolations are only done by trained and authorized persons
  • Test before you touch electrical equipment
  • Confirm fire extinguishers are available and staff know how to use them
  • Use gas mask / air filter (as required)
  • Work in accordance with the permit conditions and specific service procedures
  • Use only approved and tested tools and equipment
  • Ensure battery room is well ventilated during discharging and if boosting has occurred, use a fan before entering the room
  • Use insulated tools, covers and mats
  • Check cable colours, polarity and voltage differential is within allowable tolerance before connection
  • Confirm with drawings when paralleling batteries and double check before connection
  • Avoid creation of sparks due to capacitors connected inside battery chargers if batteries are still gassing
  • Tape down cables and use caution signs / barriers to avoid trip hazard
  • Observe correct cable cutting and crimping procedures
  • Use spill kits and clean up any slip hazards
  • Use trolley or two-person lift and correct posture when manual handling heavy objects
