Hazards Present

  • Noise – hearing damage
  • Dust – lung damage
  • Injury to operator from cutting wheel – particularly hands and / or feet
  • Soft tissue damage to hands from prolonged vibrations.
  • Burns from sparks
  • Untrained workers – tasks / tools

Risk Control Measures

  • Train workers in the correct techniques for the task
  • Train workers in the correct use of the equipment
  • Hold with two hands when the engine is running. Place your left hand on the frond handle bar and your right hand on the rear handle and throttle trigger.  This applies to left-handed users also
  • Stop the engine before putting down or carrying this machine
  • Make sure the cutting wheel has come to a complete stop
  • Grip the front handle and place the exhaust muffler at the side away from the body when carrying
  • Avoid touching the muffler as it gets hot
  • Make sure dust and petrol are cleaned from around the power head and carburetor regularly, as this may result in fire
  • Start on firm ground or other solid surfaces, do not start the wheel in a cut
  • Make sure the starting-throttle lock in not engaged when starting the saw
  • Direct sparks away from the operator and any flammable surroundings
  • Adjust the wheel guard to make sure the user is not endangered by particles of the material being cut, sparks or pieces of damaged wheels, either directly or by ricochet
  • Maintain a firm foothold
  • Begin cutting and continue at full throttle. Release the pressure as you reach the end of the cut
  • Make sure yourself or any other people are not in direct line with the blade
  • Do not cut into any pipe drum or other container without first ensuring that it does not contain roller tile or flammable substances
